Athlete Walking High Leap

Directed by: Eadweard Muybridge | Produced by: United States | Released in: 1881

The jump in Athlete Walking High Leap (1881) is genuinely impressive, worthy of commendation even by current standards. Eadweard Muybridge’s chronophotographic study offers a glimpse of the athletic events popular a century and a half ago. While the performer’s skill commands admiration, the series suffers from inadequate lighting and, more significantly, from a lack of continuity caused by the technical limitations present during the recording of the action. The final sequence generates optical effects that confuse the eye, subtly distorting our perception of the routine as a whole. It becomes evident that certain sports were not yet suited to photographic study capable of conveying continuous motion at speed. This jump stands as a testament to the process of capturing images.
